How does one go about becoming an event coordinator?
Asked by Dev
I live in Texas and am interested in event coordinating (focus on weddings) and interior design. I know how to achieve the latter, but the former doesn't appear to have any degree or school associated with it. Any help?

Your chances are greater if you do have a degree. Check with Texas Tech on this subject. They have a great program.

I was an event coordinator/concert promoter in the 90's. I didn't need any degrees to perform the job. (just a huge attention to detail and a good crew) I lived in Alaska at the time and I did need a concert promoters Bond (which cost $10,000), so vendors and businesses I was dealing with "knew" I was vetted by the State. Check out the laws in Texas, I'm not sure if you need to be bonded or not for Event Coordination. The best advice I can give you is to use the network of people you know to help you find event cord. jobs. Do the first couple of jobs at a discounted rate (to get your foot in the door so to speak) and then once you've successfully completed a few events...ask for testimonials/references from them. That'll really help when you approach new and bid on new events. Good luck, it's a really enjoyable job.
