How can an electrician in Ireland get sponsored in America. What needs to be done ?
Asked by Heather
I'm an american girl and my boyfriend is Irish. Just wondering the best way for him to go about getting a job over there as an electrician. And is it possible for him to continue an apprenticeship that he started in Ireland in the States. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

As a short term former FINANCIAL Recruiter, it is VERY difficult to get a potential employee/candidate sponsored in the states for let's say an Auditor. And an Auditor is probably one of the top financial jobs in the nation with all of the Sarbanes Oxley crap going on from the remnants of Enron. Getting sponsored by a company as an Electrician? A MIRACLE!!!
I'd concentrate on getting my CITIZENSHIP rather than getting sponsored. Electricians here are a dime a dozen. In order for a company to sponsor someone, you have got to have something that everyone who is a citizen that has your boyfriend's skills and qualifications doesn't have. Again, I'm not trying to discourage you, these are just facts.
Another WAY would be to get hired on for a special project - one that very few people can do. Again, it's about what you bring to the table that other Electricians can't. And the project might be temporary to start, but if they like his work, then it may turn into something permanent.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck - if you do find a company that will do it, let me know. I'd be very interested to see it.
Oh and on the Apprentice thing - I guess it would depend on the company. And what types of weights and measurements the Irish use. It's funny, I'm of Irish descent, and I've been to Ireland. I'm surprised I don't know that answer.....
