Is it hard to make the jump from MS Access to SQL Server or Oracle?
Asked by chi_town_johnnyb
Access gets no respect and neither do I. My career has stagnated and I need to learn a 'real' database. Any suggestions/advice?

You should find the move quite easy. You can download and start using free versions of SQL Server, Oracle or DB2 from the official web sites as they all have free express versions now. Have a look for online tutorials or forums on each product. Decide whether you prefer Microsoft, Oracle or IBM as an RDBMS vendor and start learning it. For work in smaller business you are probably better off with SQL Server. You can also extend your learning to the add on products such as Analysis Services and Microsoft BI.

Yes. You have to have experience with Structured Query Language (SQL) scripting to effectively use SQL Server or Oracle. Try taking a class or getting certified as an Oracle DBA or SQL server specialist.

Oh yeah, it is quite differente. MS Access was made for people who doesn't know techincal knowledge. Try learning SQL syntax, it is the base for all the other real databases.
