I actually took my degree in Chemistry, but worked for years in the Environmental field. I started by being a glorified lab tech and running tests in the field (mainly to see how much pollution was coming from smokestacks). I discovered that I could write about scientific things and did a bunch of Superfund work, both site evaluation and response to comments. The part I really loved, however, was developing and teaching classes to teach site evaluation skills to EPA inspectors. If you're interested in more information, I suggest that you contact the Human Resources department of some environmental firms. They may be able to spend a few minutes talking to you. (Figure you'll be making about 5 times as many calls as you get positive responses.) Also, talk to the professors at the school you're looking at. Finally, consider taking some of the free (or nearly so) seminars through EPA. Look at the web site. Then, once you're there, talk to anyone who will listen. Be polite, dress like you're interviewing, and take notes. Thn, keep in touch once or twice a year with a few of the folks you meet. This got me a few jobs. Once I had the degree and knew kind of what I wanted to do, I discovered that I had some contacts who could point me at possabilities. Best of luck.
