Best place to start is to try a temp agency. Why? Most companies are going to this "try before you buy" mentality. Meaning, employers have a lot to lose with a new employee (ie benefits, labor unions, strikes etc) if that person either doesn't perform, cannot perform their duties as expected or has a bad work ethic. It's hard for employers to rationalize why they've hired a "dud" to their corp office, so most will go to a temp agency for "temp to hire" status workers. They base your performance (usually 90 days) off of what you "may do" when hired with them full time. It's a good idea to register with a temp agency to gain experience AND to get your foot in the door!--How do I know? I've been on all THREE sides to the playing field.

I agree with jimbob. Also I would suggest getting certified in the subject matter related to the type of work you want to do. Certification from a technical or subject matter can be extremely useful to get you moving forward. Check out the website www.brainbench.com and go to the section call roles. The certifications that brainbench gives are recognized and accepted in the business world. If you pass any of the tests they have for certification, you can immediately put them on your resume and they are valid for 3 years from the date of testing.
