Auditors are generally accountants - Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). The auditor comes in to check inventory, examine books, and make sure everything that needs to be accounted for is on the books. There is a lot of responsibility and liability involved in being an auditor - think "Enron." If you as the auditor miss something, the company you are auditing can face serious repercussions from the government - if the mistake is big enough.
To be a CPA, you need at least 4 years of college and a bachelor's degree in Accounting. Many states also require that you take a number of "master's level" courses in order to sit for the CPA exam. If you want more information, go to the website for the AICPA - the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. http://www.aicpa.org/index.htm
