What are the pros & cons of being a graphic designer?
Asked by { ? }
I'm curious to know what some formal pros & cons are of such a career choice as graphic design. I'm currently looking into that field of work. Or does anyone have any tips on the web design field.

CONS: Designing doesn't pay the best for the amount of bullshit you must endure. There are other 4 yr degrees you could get that would make much more money (don't even bother going for any less than a 4 year degree if you pick this). But of course we aren't in it for the money are we? No we are in it because we *love* to design. Well forget it. You are not an artist anymore. You are the bitch at the mercy of whoever your client is or your boss (whatever the case might be). You will spend countless hours on a project just to have red x's and corrections or complete do-overs spackled all over it. Not to mention - the papers are not littered with graphic design job openings... ever. Don't think for one minute that anyone cares a piss about your 4 year degree because they don't. Until you have at least 3 years of experience (which is the hardest part to find), you will be begging for jobs and going to temp agencies. So good luck because you'll need it. PROS: If you really love designing, you will love about 25% of your job. You could be your own boss someday if you open your own design firm. There is room for upward mobility if you someday become a creative or art director. You could branch out into many different areas of design or even closely related fields like marketing. Lots of jobs are out there if you can find an opening you're lucky.
