Can I apply for home health and be my father's provider or caregiver and get paid for it?
Asked by delila_mcglothine
I have been taking care of him for the past three years since he has his first stroke. He has been living with me for many of years. His memory is not the same. I got a letter from the doctor that his disablity is permanent and that I am his caregiver. I have been cooking, paying his bills, taking him to doctor's appt., etc. I also have power of attorney as an alternative and my older brother is first. He wil start getting medicare on May 1, 2006. I tried to work but my hours got to long and I was not here to cook or make sure he took his medicine. So I left to be here for him to make sure that he had the right meals to eat. I am the one that is doing everything for him till now.

Contact your local Social Service. Use the Yellow Pages to find the number.
They first need tp evaluate if he is eligible for in home care benefits.
If he does, yes, you can be listed as his caregiver.

You can get licensed through medicare to be an independent care giver but you are not allowed to take care of a family member.

I doubt it, unless you're a medical professional. They will pay for someone else to come in and help though.

The answer will probably depend on what state you live in.
Even if there is not state support you should probably work out an agreement with your brother to help you financially during the time you take care of your father. Either that or if he is local, he should agree to at least take care of him enough, so that you can work.
