If you are a helper then the electrician should supply you with the tools you need in my opinion. My partner is a builder and he doesn't expect his labourers to have their own mixing buckets and brooms!

Being a helper means one day you hope to be an electrician yourself. Am I right? Therefore have as many of the same tools as the electrician has. Ask to see his tool bag, don't be shy. Also there are books on all types of tools that you can research on the internet and in the library. If you can afford to buy all its even better. A good investment for you because it will be easier to learn to do something if you don't have to wait to borrow that of the electrician himself. Also if you borrow from the electrician, you have to give them back. Yours will be yours to keep and you can practic when you are nor at work.

I usually have my helpers bring with them the basic electrician tools, (depending on residential or commercial) which include:
linemans
strippers
common black vinyl electrical tape
8 in 1 screwdriver (always rubber!!)
Sharpie!!
if you want to impress, grab a voltage checker, looks like a pen (home depot, made by greenlee)
Good luck, its a great business.....
