How did people vaccum carpets prior to vaccum cleaner ? Or did carpeted apartlements came after vaccum cleaner

they used brooms or mechanical carpet sweepers or took the rugs out to beat them. Not as efficient as vacuums but got the job done.

A:

I believe people had area rugs that they would take out and beat in the open air to remove the dirt. Probably wall to wall carpet was very rare,
