What is a job, besides teaching, that lets you work with teenagers?
Asked by laurieanne72
I have a sociology degree and have been doing some substitute teaching which I like doing but it does not really pay well enough. My favourite group to work with is teenagers. I do not want to work with troubled teens so any ideas on jobs that would pay half way decently working with "normal" teenagers?

yeah, I got a psych degree-not using it. worked with trobled teens for a while and couldn't handle it.
you may try for places like the YMCA for an activity director.
Or maybe athletics coach.
I think a lot of us social science majors ask that same question...big shock when we get out of school....

You can look into student life positions at colleges. This is with older teens, usually ones that are entering college (freshmen and sophomores, 17-19 years old). You could get a position as a Resident Director in a dorm, or as someone who plans on-campus events for the students, whether it's a concert, field day, mud pit, or the like. Sometimes you need to have a master's degree in something, but your degree should give you a good start.
If you just want something to do with teens and aren't interested in getting paid, do some volunteer work with a local shelter or boys and girls club.

You can work with troubled children as a big brother or sister. Or, you can find a local residential home for kids in the system that need "residential care workers". The position is called different names in different areas, but it's the same thing. You help troubled teens in their activities of daily living, and assist with lifes tasks. Many of these kids are just normal untroubled teens.
You can also become a foster parent, just ask for kids without emotional problems, they are out there.
Good Luck

There are numerous jobs that will let you have contact with teenagers. Among them are:
social workers, coaches, doctors, psycologists, psychiattists, music specialists, camp directors,YMCA workers, YWcA workers,clergy...I agree with a previous answer-go to your guidance counselor/favorite teacher and ask advice. Be sure to pick a field that you will be happy with!
