How can someone who is a hard worker, inteligent and willing to learn able to get a good paying job?
Asked by johnny53
I have worked since I was 17, high school grad, high IQ, very diverse work experience, including office, warehouse, picking/packing, assembly and customer service. I was laid off from my job of 5.5 years in June 05 because of company downsizing due to the losses in the telecommunication industry, and since then have been applying non-stop for jobs, only to get low paying temporary assignments through agencies.
I would dearly love, and desperately need a full time position that pays more than $10 an hour.
What do I need to do? HELP!

Been there. All you get is crappy hourly jobs, stuff you don't want to do, looking for bigger and better but nothing coming about? sound about right? I have no real suggestion for you other than to keep plugging away. I went through about a 6-7 month stretch of what you're going through. It came to a point where, I was living in Pittsburgh at the time, I said, what's here for me? I looked around and saw that the only I apparently was worth was some menial sh*it job paying 9/hr. I moved since and have landed a nice comfy job in mortgage as a loan officer. if you're comfortable with straight commission the ngive it a try. I'll tell you now to stop wasting your time with the temp agencies. They don't realy give a sh*it about YOUR interests, only their desire to fill a slot by the end of the week. Once in a blue moon they will come across something you'll be interested in but very rarely will that happen. Just keep them on the hook for now but don't burn that bridge just yet. There are placement agencies that deal with more professional positions out there. They still are temp agencies but do more salary and higher positions than the temp agencies do. The ones that come to mind are Robert Half and Officeteam and Manpower. See if there are any in your area and give them a try. Other wise, keep doing the Monster/HotJobs/Careerbuilder thing until something catches your eye. When something does, milk it as if it were you're only hope for work. redo your resume to what they want to hear. Since you've had lots of various experiience, mix and match your skillset until it fits what they are looking for. Also, network. use your friends and family members and see if there are any opening they know of. The old saying holds true that it's not what you know but who you know. If you're looking for something along the lines of exp you've had, look at Aerotech. they specialize in fields of work similar to what your background is.

The best place to start is in your newspaper's classified ads. You can also check out www.craigslist.com for job ads in your area.

I know what you mean. If only employers would just give you a chance they'd see what a hard worker you are. My suggestion is to go to college. More and more people these days have a college degree and maybe it would help give you that extra edge.

Go to a plant, factory or refinery. They pay well to hard workers who are smart.

I am Canadian, looking to expand my Business into US. Where are you? How old are You? Are you Honest and reliable? If you can see yourself calling on Retailers, and supervising two other individuals, I can teach you to be a Sales Manager, earning $1000.+ per 40 hour week. No investment required. How keen are you??
