What do you do as an office assistant?
Asked by Leah S.
I'm turning 16 this summer and I recently got the opportunity in getting an office job. I will have to act as an administrative assistant in a small company, I have no experience whatsoever, and I'm curious to find out what kind of things I'll be doing in the office. Can you guys tell me some things you have to do as an administrative assistant? Please explain specifically for me!

Best Answer:
Typing, filing, running errands, answering the phone, taking messages. Lots of paperwork. Checking orders, placing orders. If you like school and doing school work and being organized, you should like it. It is important to know how to spell, be courteous, and behave and dress professionally. Best of luck!

Based upon my experience, what you have to do would be the following stuffs: greeting clients, answering phones, making copies, filing, some paper work, some computer stuffs. your boss may ask you to do more than these!! Good luck!!

You will be doing anything they ask. Getting coffee, making copies, typing, answering phones, and filing. It isnt a fun job, but potentially you can make some decent money. It is good experience and a much better job than those that your friends may have. Remember to keep a smile on your face. Some bosses can be harsh, but if you can stick with it- you are gaining valuable experiences.

That is a good place to start. An office assistant will generally fax correspondence, make copies, use MS Office (Email, Calendar), Word, Excel. You may pass out pay checks, which people love to receive. You will work with outside vendors (vendors are the companies who supply the coffee, sodas, etc. for the managers or executives), as well as learning how to use the timeclock, run timeclock reports and how to use the phone systems. You may have to cover for the receptionist when that person calls in sick or takes his/her lunch. An admin. assistant does a lot and, if you learn quickly and excel in this position, you might be headed for a managerial position in the future. You might want to take business classes at a community college to earn an AA or BA (or BS, if you're into the sciences) to secure a salary in the $70k's and higher after you earn your degree. To start, salaries start between $25k and $40k, depending on the industry, your experience and your responsibilities. Good luck!!

Well, I am actually going to school for Office Administration- Medical. It all depends on what type of office you're going to be working in. But most jobs like that involve A LOT of typing and filing.
