How do I get a job working on a boat or on shore? Without experience or schooling?
Asked by mjh302
I live in Pittsburgh where I think there are opportunities for one like me to work and a boat, like bridge maintanance or dock building or even working on a barge loading and unloading. But I just don't know who to talk to. Can you help me?

All you need to do to work on a boat is go apply for the job. There really is no special training for something like that.

There's always a need for wait staff at restaurants on the water, especially in summer. No schooling required!

I don't live up north, but on the gulf coast you hump it as a deckhand for terrible pay til you learn the ropes and make a name for yourself as a 'never say die' guy. As word gets out, as all small working communities do, you in time will make the name for yourself to make the big bucks. Until then--find out what you're made of and go for it.

try calling the city maintenance department, or the dock master, if they have one. Also go to where the barges dock and ask someone where the hiring office is. Be prepared to fill out an application right then and there. Have a pen and all the info you need handy. So you don't have any blank spaces or tell them that you will have to get back to them with the information.

Move up to Alaska and check with fishing boat skippers. They don't care about your past.
