Career Questions and Answers
what is harder? accounts payable or accounts receivable?
Asked by genius
i was working as a AR clerk and getting 12.00 an hour. i am now a AP clerk and getting 16.00 an hour. is this right? i think that AR is harder to learn? Why wouldn't a company pay the clerks the same whether they are AP or AR?

I was working for a company that paid more than a million dollars a week in bills. Would you want someone working for $12.00/hour to do that? You want someone that has good experience and knowledge. Someone that's able to handle the responsibility. I did both and then did only A/P. I liked the stress and rush. The good thing about the experience you're getting is that that you're able to learn more and possibly advance your career. My boss asked me to take an "Accounting Fundamentals" class at the local technical school. After I pass the class he gave me a nice raise, a new job and a new job title. <g>

Perhaps the liability is more critical on payouts, and maybe you just got lucky! Good for you!

I have seen the reverse too. It all depends on the company. If A/R is their main function they pay more for A/R employees.

AP is alot more work, I do both actually, and I would rather do receivables than payables.

They're both demons, the difference is that AR tends to pay a bit more and is more appreciated; that's the money coming in.

I fully agree with you.
As an AR clerk you have to deal with customers that don't pay.
As an AP clerk you don“t really deal with suppliers, unless of course your business has a cash flow problem but this is a different circumstance.

AP is your responsibility and AR is other party's responsibility. If people realize their responsilities, keep their promises and want to live a honest life, neither AP should be harder nor AR.

Well accounts payable or accounts receiveable, neither of them are hard, bcoz,if you have a record of them you can refer them at the time you need it.
