Can a Japanese Work Visa apply if you work for a second company?
Asked by Lewis Ranja
If I get a job with one company in Japan, get my Work Visa, and then go off to work for a second company - does that Work Visa still apply for the new company or do I have to get a brand new Work Visa? Furthermore, if that first company gets pissed off at me, can they do anything to retract the Work Visa?

I'm assuming that you're going to be working in Japan. If that's the case, yes, you can change companies and still keep your visa until it expires. Your new company will simply have to sponsor your visa extension, which is a simple process. I lived and worked in Tokyo for nearly 6 years, and had a specialist in humanities/international services visa (probably the most common for teachers and businesspeople), which you can extend for a year at a time twice, then you can get a 3-year extension. Check with your local Consulate General of Japan (they have offices in many major cities) for more details.
Also, go ahead and get your multiple re-entry permit at the same time you get your visa - that will save you at least half a day of waiting because you can get them both done at the same time and not have to go back again.
To my knowledge, there is nothing a company can do to retract a work visa once you have it.
I've included a few links below that should help answer any other questions you may have about visas. Good luck!
