What are some tips to becoming a freelance photographer?

I work full time, I am 36 yrs old and love the art of photography, don't have a lot of income or extra money to spend but would love to try and start a freelance career in photography, I have quite a few of pictures I feel could make good stock photos, any tips would be great! thanks! Regina

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in. I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box. Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links. Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Contact photographers who you like and admire and solicit advice from them. Also, contact publications that you would like to submit to and see what kind of requirements they have. Often they will have this info on their websites--for ex. Lonely Planet.
