NGO's involved in development that may hire an Industrial Engineer?
Asked by Carlos Sosa
I am graduating this year and want to work in economic development. The problem is that the UN asks me for previous experience, and people like Engineers Without Borders don't hire foreigners. I mean, EWB Canada only hires Canadians. Do you know of any group that I might join, as an Uruguayan Industrial Engineer without experience in volunteering? Thanks in advance. By the way, I do have experience in investment planning and evaluation, in sales and in material handling.

To get a job in the United Nations, you can have a better chance if you take a Masters degree, preferably in the field of sociology, economics or other social science field. Having an MA increases your chances of getting a Professional Staff position. Without an MA you'd be relegated to the General Staff positions - which are lower paying and less chances for advancement. Crossing over from GS to PS position is difficult, though possible. Otherwise, try UNV United Nations Volunteer http://www.unv.org - they may have openings for your qualifications.
