There are several opportunites available.
1. become a plumber. They are always in demand. I have a friend in that line of work.
2. become a remodeler. They are in demand also. I have a friend who does that full time in my small midwest community.
3. Join the police force. In a small town, that should be a fairly uneventful job.
4. Sell insurance. That is alway a possibility.
5. Teach school. There is always a need for teachers.

The first thing you need to do is think about what you like to do. I work part time for two different companies, but honestly, if you live in a small town, then you'd need a business that was strictly phone and internet based. I'm sure you've heard Melaleuca.. it is a great company... has been around for a long time, and it would be a good business for you to do in a small town. Basically, the company sells non toxic products ranging from cleaning supplies to Nicole Miller makeup. You basically sell memberships to people who inquire about the company over the internet. Anyways.. there is a ton of info about it if you are interested, just email me.. txathome@yahoo.com

I would love to have a pretty little shop like the one in Practical Magic. But I doubt you could actually make a decent living with the small amount of customers you would have with the limited population. ALTHOUGH, with the internet connecting everyone, I could also do mail order!

I would do a lot of research first. I would find out what the place had and what the people wanted. Whether it be daycare for their children or just a chauffer to take them to do their errands. I would make a list and start there. I would decide what I enjoyed doing and narrow it down. I have started my own business in my current home town, and make a fair amount. I would succeed, and would not give up until I did.

Get a job at Walmart. Middle Americans all seem to have a good work ethic. You may have to start out bagging groceries. In time you can work your way up to manager of the store. Do a good job and someone will notice. You could become a vice-president some day. I think there are too many Waltons still around. So it is unlikely that you will be named CEO.

I do live in a very small town. 1 small grocery market and a hardware store. That's it! You have to go 20 miles or more to get to the nearest Wall-mart. So a year ago I opened a consignment/gift shop. It took off like crazy! Once you get to know what kind of stuff the people in that area are looking for, than try to stay with that. It will change with the seasons. Personally I sell a lot of Nautical Gifts, Marine Supplies, Small furniture items and kitchen wear. Christmas season was really fun last year! I love my shop, and wouldn't change a thing. Good Luck!

Childcare.
I would run the best pre-school/nursery school in the area and provide daycare for those babies who weren't old enough for pre-school. I'd get licensed and study child development and be the best place for little children for miles around. I would set up shop near an elementary school so parents have one stop drop off. Besides, I would love it!!

I thank God for the gifts and talents He has given me. If I were living in a small town in the heartland of America - I would do what I do best - teach! Elementary, Middle and/or Secondary, teach reading to all ages, English as a Second Language, other speech skills. I have also learned how to grow some crops - tomatoes, greens, canning fruits - to sell. Also, I could teach piano and voice lessons, start a small community play group, parent group, I am 'crafty' - make quilts, crochet, picture frames, photo albums to sell in flee markets.

farming, e-tail, general foods store, writing, composing, painting, diner, run a b&b if tourists come any part of the year to ski, hike, fish, commune w/nature. opportunities really depend on the particulars of the small town -- who lives there, their needs and what already exists.
