Can you think of 1 gender neutral workplace having both a position typically filled by men & another by women?
Asked by Sammy
I'm working on a project requiring a gender-neutral workplace setting with a traditionally male position and a traditionally female position. By gender neutral, I mean it has to be a place that is stereotypically known to hire both women and men employees, only it is stereotypically known to hire more of one sex for a particular position and more of the opposite sex for another position. Also, the workplace has to be somewhat specific. For example, I thought about a big store like Sears, where the traditionally male position could be in the automotive department and the traditionally female position could be in the clothing department, but that is too broad-- Both positions must be for the same line of products or services. Any ideas will help!! Thank you!

This situation arises somewhat frequently in the food manufacturing and cosumer packed goods industry. While every location and situation is different, many times women are hired for positions on assembly lines doing packaging operations, especially for repetitive motion tasks that can be performed while seated, while men would be hired for material handling jobs (bringing product to and from the line on a forklift, stacking cases on pallets), maintenance jobs (repairing equipment on the manufacturing line) or operating large machinery. This would also be common in the clothing industry, where women might do the assembly (sewing clothes together), while men run the freight dock. I did a project once at a company that made assorted chocolates in boxes. The individual chocolate pieces were manufactured in large volumes on fast, highly automated lines. Men were typically staffed on the machines. The manual operations of painting decorations on the chocolates, actually placing the individual pieces of chocolate into trays and the trays into boxes and tying ribbons around the boxes were all done by women. Men then packed the boxes into cases, stacked them on pallets, and drove them on a forklift to the warehouse for shipping, which was also done by men. I've also seen similar patterns in produce packing, produce canning, and frozen meal manufacturing.

The Military In the Army most of the MOS (Army code for Job - Military Occupational Specialty) are gender neutral. The Combat Arms Jobs (Infantry and Armor) are gender specific (Males only), although in the type of war we are currently in (Insurgency) the combat and attacks happen as easily with women as with men. The Army is actual very good at be gender (and Race) neutral. Good Luck!
