Career Questions and Answers
Any staff accountants out there?
Asked by ranny h
I'm thinking about being an accountant. Could someone give me some details about this career. I have some questions to ask: How stressful is it? Do you enjoy it? what are the hours like? How often do you talk on the phone or interact with other co-workers? Do you look forward to it everyday? Will software programs replace accountants in the future? Should i major in something else?

it depends on what kind of college you are in and what your personality is like. all the accountants i know are all very reliable, stable, risk averse and not extremely ambitious.
if this sounds like you than sure, it can be a great career.
now to answer your questions... is it stressful? sometimes, it depends on what kind of accountant you become. tax accountants become very busy just before the tax deadline every year. audit accountants are very busy after the end of the year. staff accountants become busy during the monthly close.
do you enjoy it? like i said that depends on your personality.
hours are normal 9-6 during normal times, during the busy season, you could be working until 10pm or 11pm, sometimes even longer.
staff accountants interact with other co-workers all the time, unless you are a bookkeeper. then bookkeepers are basically really smart data entry ppl.
looking forward to it? depends if you like the tedious quantitative work.
software will never replace accountants.

I'm not so sure about the software not replacing accountants idea. I will say that software has replaced many functions of bookkeeping.
To answer your question, an accountant will probably make more money working for a corporation, than a small business. Obviously, the more certifications you have, the more money you can command.
