Does anyone work for the United States Postal Service???

I have been offered a job as a Part-Time Flexible Clerk. I'm told most employees start at this level. What exactly does flexible mean. I currently work a stable 9 to 5 job, 5 days a week, no weekends or holidays. Would I be giving that all up taking a job with the Post Office?

My dad has been working there for like ten years. Flexible means when they need you to stay for overtime you stay. When my dad first starting working there he worked 6 days a week and until about 6 or 7 at night. Starting right after Thanksgiving, you will be always working. Basically flexible means when they need you to stay you stay. Even when they ask you can you stay, its more like telling you. The upside is they do pay good, and your checks will be huge with all the extra overtime. The down side is all of the hours, and no matter what the weather is like outside, you still have to show up.

I am a retired Postal Worker (Carrier). Not just most, but ALL Postal workers start out that way. What "flexible" means is that you will have to be "flexible" and probably work a lot of hours, but all they have to guarantee by law is part-time. In all my years I only saw one case where a PTF (as we would call a part-time flexible) had to get transferred somewhere else due to business conditions slowing down. I never actually saw anyone get laid off in my 17 years there. By the way, you should feel good about being a clerk - only about one in 5 hires nowadays is one, the rest being carriers - and the work is WAY easier - no dogs.
