Is 50 too old to get a job driving over the road for truckers?
Asked by Christine H
If you can pass the DOT Physical, pass the written tests, get all the license endorsements and become a truck driver on paper, can you still get a job if you are over 50?

Absolutely. There's alot of "older" truckers out there. Many have been at it for decades, but many are new to the industry. There're many who take it up after retirement to keep busy, and because the "empty nest" syndrome means that aside from the wife, (who you can bring along) there's nothing stopping em from doing it. The industry is such, that there's people coming and going ALL the time. With so few people willing and able to do the job, companies are always looking for OTR drivers. Unlike other entry level industries, age is'nt nearly as big a factor in hire-ability as other fields. I'd actually venture the opinion that trucking companies would look at it favorably. Being over 50, you're gonna be more mature, and have more experience in all facets of life. Tech, business, etc industries look at "lifespan" of the person's career. In trucking, many come in and leave within 1 or 2 years. You'll want to look at going to a trucking school. It'll greatly improve your chances of being hired.

Fifty isn't old anymore compared to what people used to think. If retirement is 62 (or 65) there are still a lot of work years left in a 50 year old.
