Why are companies so prejudice about hiring a female Crane Operator?
Asked by kitty cat
I have companies that will call around begging for a crane operator to my male buddies. When they suggest me, they tell them oh, okay. This company I work for alot said they got alot of calls everytime they sent me to a plant. They were saying, "What's up you sent me a woman?" But this company always told them "Give her a chance, she's an excellent operator". And they told me they always go excellent reviews back on me. But must about 85% of the companies will not hire a woman crane operator. I have had companies go from leary about putting me on a job, to requesting me. But because I am a woman alot of jobs won't send me out or hire me.To be honest alot of men tell me I am the only woman crane operator they have ever seen. . Why do they still do this in this day and age.? It is so unfair and hurtful.

but I thought.......... See that is the thing about prejudiced that people don't get. It doesn't matter if you are qualified are not, it knows no bounds and it already as a mind set and a opinion that is hard to change......
Take my mother for example(she is white so you should be able to relate) She went for the job of an electrician as a civilian working for the government. She had to fight to just get that job and then she had to fight to get respect and promotions. It was hard being the first, but she never gave in and never quit even though she would come home crying. After they realized how great of a job she was doing they hired another women electrician. Every one has told her since that she was going to make or break it for other women, but that of coarse would have remained inside knowledge. You have to keep trucking and know that when you are in a field that not too many women opt for, you have a twice as hard of a battle. It is worth it in the end, for the future of other women who might want to do as you do. Good luck and blessings. Keep your head up

Well first of all woman are always looked at second class when it comes to crane operator! Mens jobs are ment for men just face it! Just think about it if a man was using a crane then you pass by and he gets a bonar and accidently moves the gear, well you know the story..

Why don't you file a complaint against the company(s) that said you sent a woman. We can do anything a man can but better. With the exception of being able to write our name in the snow and peeing like they do.

my guess would be that the male workers would not be as productive if you are around
or perhaps they will not concentrate on their work with a female distraction around
not fair to you :(
you should try to speak up
complain and demand your way like the rest of the "guys"

Many industries have just now gotten past the stigma of hiring a women to do a mans job, but not all of them. I am sorry for your situation, but it sounds like you will prevail. My guess to the "why" part of your question is that working men and bosses still worry and believe that women are too incompetant to preform "masculine" tasks such as yours. They don't want to hire someone they have to protect, so to speak. That, added with the fact that you may pose as a threat to your male counterparts. Yes, it is very unfair and very hurtful. I recently had a female member of my family fired, in a white collar position keep in mind, for smiliar reasons, the only difference was they claimed she was a "b****", not incompetant, which is yet another stigma that will probably always stand hand and hand with the word women. Best of luck to you in your career and personal life.
