what should you say your interests/ hobbies are when applying for a job in a retail store?

I'm applying for a job in customer service at this retail store who sell clothing (men, women & kids' clothing), a few electrical items, home furniture, flowers, gifts etc etc. I was wondering what hobbies/interests would be relevant to applying to this store. I like music, travelling, reading books etc etc. Aah right, I was kinda confused cuz I always keep reading stuffs saying that you only need to tell them about things that are relevant to the job. So, i thought, perhaps that was applicable to hobbies too. Anyways thanks !!!

Don't try to make something up. Tell them what your hobbies and interests REALLY are. They didn't list that question to see if you had interests that would be relevent to your job; they listed them as a point of conversation so they could ask you about them and find out how well you communicate, how passionate you are about the things you like, and whether you're the type of person who has a wide variety of interests or very specific interests. Just be prepared to talk about the things you like during the job interview.

(Might be wrong) but I really do not think the question of hobbies has any relevance to getting the job. Stay honest. In my interviews, I hardly asked this question but noticed them from the resume itself. It just kind of tell me the personality of the person, that's about all.

As an interviewer, it's not a question I usually ask. But if I do, it's really not about the particulars, just an overall sense of the person. When people put their hobbies on resumes and applications unasked, I sometimes wonder about their business sense and seriousness level. I say answer honestly if asked, highlighting things that may relate to the job such as being a great gift wrapper. Otherwise, I wouldn't bring it up.

My suggestion is that you share a hobby that you enjoy that will let them know more about you, and that may make you stand out. Any of the ones you mentioned are good, but maybe add what kind of books you like, or where you have traveled, or an instrument you play. Make it personal, but brief.

I am in HR. The best advise I can give you is to be professional but also be yourself/genuine. The list of hobbies you listed are perfect. Tell them you like music, traveling, and books.

they ask about hobbies in order to determine you as a whole person. if you say i like to collect stamps, or coins,or are a big sports fan,its OK. if you tell them you like to collect posters of serial killers, not so much.

This question could be to your advantage if you know any crafts. You may be considered for teaching a short class to sell a book. Since you enjoy traveling, you could choose a book and compare the sites you have seen as a book review. Candy
