Is it too late to become a paralegal? How should I start ?
Asked by curious_weather_girl
I've been out of college for 9 years now. In those nine years, I've worked in advertising industry, hating every minute of it. I've been unemployed for a month, trying to find something new. I'm giving a serious consideration to becoming a paralegal, but I have some questions. First, should I try to get some temp work at a legal firm and see if I really 100% want to get into the paralegal field ? Second, do you really need to go back to school and get certified? I've read that there's a 2 year program you can get certified in (which one of the local community colleges here has), but I've also read a lot of the experience is hands-on. And finally, am I too old to try to get into the field? I'm 31 and for some reason thinking most new paralegals are kids right out of business school. Any direction would help me.

I'd think that you are at the optimum age for being a paralegal. This is a highly demanding job and, if you work for a large law firm in Los Angeles, you could earn $60K, but you will definitely EARN IT. Attorneys in large, high priced firms are not the nicest people to work for. You will be dealing with large egos, and highly stressed individuals. If you work for a small firm, the atmosphere may be nicer, but your pay will be significantly less. If you are serious, go to a community college and take the 2 year program--you will be in much greater demand and will earn more over your lifetime career. Re. pay: ask the local college for info. on local pay rates.
I'm a former personnel recruiter.
