It depends on the store. Where I work the Assistant Managers are called third persons. There are a couple in each department(Grocery, Hardware, etc.) and they're directly under the Department Managers, whom are directly under the Store Director. The responsibilities of the third persons may vary. They pretty much run the department when the department manager is gone. They manage the department employees, tell them what to do and stuff. As far as pay goes, again it varies.
