How much should a waitress get paid?
Asked by kramebeardoodlebug
i am a waitress how works at a small eatery and I think that I am getting jipped by my employer. I just think that $2.50 an hour is a small amount. Since I have to share the tips w/ all of the wait staff and the people in the back (kitchen). Is this wrong or am I being spoiled?

The law allows employees who are tipped to be paid below the minimum wage; however, the hourly wage including tips can't fall below the federal (or state) minimum wage. If your tips each night don't average to the minimum wage, your boss owes you the difference.

Although it seems low, it is the average pay. Try extra hard to get extra tips... or try a different job if you aren't happy with the pay.

I worked as a waitress in a Chinese restaurant in UK and got £5.00 an hour plus tips.

Dang. To quote my boyfriend: "You're getting paid less then a Mexican!" No offense to anybody.
Um, Maybe it's just because I live in Vermont or somethin', but our average wage is $7.50 an hour... and I think average wage across the U.S. is $5.50...

I think it's that way because of the tips waitresses get. I don't believe it should be shared though. If a waitress busts her butt she should get the tips to herself b'cause how can anyone be sure the other waitresses worked even that hard? I've seen a lot of waitresses complain and give bad service and then expect a fair tip? NOT!
