I have been a commercial diver for over 12 years it is a tough racket but if you can ride it out you will make some cash. In regards to your question of getting your topside welding certs before going to a commercial diving school, it wouldn't be a bad idea especially because of your age I don't know about the school but to work you have to be 18 years of age so if you got that topside welding under your belt it is going to make you that more useful to an employer when you get out of dive shool. young divers are a dime a dozen young divers that can weld and are mechanical are not that will keep you working and the more you work the more your name and rep will get around and that means$$$$$$$$$$$$$. check out this site it might help you out

I would go to a trade school first and get your "surface welding"
MIG, TIG, stick and the rest. It would be helpful to have those skills in your pocket, you never know what the future will bring. Much easier to go to school at your age when you have less obligations.
