Asked by Tony Sells Homes
I have been in the Navy as a Police officer for 4 years, how can I make this in to a resume for a sales position. I have limited sales exp. working at Home Depot, but that was retail, and the job is for mass quantity building materials.

Sales jobs are the hardest to fill. Start with your education- even military education scores points. Then write your experience in the military and be honest about your duties and responsibilities. You can focus on your customer service skills: phone, clerical, overall how you deal with the public in a positive way. In sales they just want to know you can handle a variety of personalities and be strong enoough not to take no for an answer. You also need to be confident so military shows that. Also don't underestimate your Home Depot experience. You sold stuff there even if you were the cashier. Good luck!

If your a true salesman, you can go in and talk your way into a job. Who needs a resume? If they ask, sell them on why it's not needed and change the course of the conversation to best suit you. Be sure to get plenty of "little yes's" and get them nodding thier head. If you can talk the right game, any salesman worth a damn will probably not only give you the job, but will stand up, give you a hug, and introduce you to the rest of the staff. If you can't talk your way in, maybe this isn't the right gig for you. Or consider car sales. They'll throw just about any chump against the wall and see if they'll stick, and suprisingly, the experience will probably give you more sales knowledge than any diploma you can find. Good Luck.
