At 5 years you are already out of your apprenticeship stage, so you should be able to aim for regular jobs that demand skilled personnel. If you live in an area heavy on industry you should not have trouble finding a place that can use you. As for training, unless there are newer techniques for welding, your training would be limited to familiarization with newer welding equipment, OSHA training or maybe train in specific fabrication that relies on this kind of welding.

You have several opportunities ahead of you most jobs in maintenance will not hire you unless you can weld.Several places are hiring for welders of your sort,look at the east coast all the ship yards that are hiring. I work in the barge building business for 17 years now over welding along the lines you mentioned and have done quite well for my self by working in this field. Education would be good to have where maybe you could become a teacher or own your own business in welding maybe a fab shop or repair shop where you can travel or stay put in your home area.
