What is the going Rate to charge for babysitting?

I currently work in a Latchkey setting and would like to make some extra money. I'm not a kid, and I have years of experience. I have college background in early childhood education also. What should I charge for babysitting? I know working as a full time nanny I was making $10 an hour but I don't think I can charge this much for babysitting on an as needed basis. What should I charge? I'm in Michigan. by the way, I work in the latchkey program at my daughters school. Although the parents are charged $3 for each child, I get $8 an hour. I am going to post a note by the signout sheet that I'm available, to hopefully make some extra money and I was thinking of charging the same as I make now, $8 an hour. is this a good price?

It really seems to depend on where you live what you can charge. I have babysat and also been a nanny in MI. As a babysitter I made $8-10/hr. As a nanny I made more than that, but was also asked to do housework, cooking, laundry, driving around, .... I do really think it depends how many children you will be caring for, what their needs are, and also what the parents require of you. When you are caring for newborns or children with special needs, you often need to pay closer attention and care. Older kids (6+) are often more independent and do not require as much care. I think that $8/hr is reasonable to ask if your only responsibility will be caring for a child or two.

I would think it would differ on the amount of children, ages and how long you would have to watch them.

5$ an hour 5$ child an extra $10 for newborns and twins an exra 20$ for clearing up an $30 if the kid's sick an extra 5$ there are more sick kids and 40$ to punish the child that's about $115 if i did math right

It reallly depends on the job. If it's just on the weekends or something like that $10 an hour might not be so bad to some people. If you have the same children every week for the same amount of time, I would suggest a fixed rate. I live in Indiana and the daycares around here charge $60 - $90 a week per child. Charge a little less than that and you'll get more children. More children equals more money.

Same rate as the school teachers get paid in your area. That's what they do babysit. Just no benefits for you and all the risk if something goes wrong. Never under pay yourself, or you could volunteer your services to those who really need it.
