It varies. My husband is one (ok and it's a fancy name for a mechanic by the way). He works for a car rental agency so gets straight hourly pay. Much depends on the shop and how busy you are. The busy weeks mean great paychecks...but the slow ones mean you starve. We went this route to have a guaranteed paycheck. It also helps to be ASE certified, it helps you command more an hour.
