How much should I pay a housekeeper? By day or hour?
Asked by Jen G
I am looking to hire someone to help me clean my house, not to do it for me but just here to help out while I'm home. I have a larger house with 3 full bathrooms and large kitchen, large laundry room ect ect....Those are mainly the rooms I need help with. Should I pay by room? by hour? by day? Please let me know.

Depending on how much there is to do in each room - I wouldnt pay by the hour - they'll just take their time doing it to get more money, I'd estimate how long I'd think cleaning them all would take and if its say 3 hours then I'd offer between 35-45 dollars per day. It also depends how many days they'd come in, if its once you may want to add extra.
A:
at least minimum wage, unless you go illegal alien route. ;-)

i think u should pay by hour. If u were going to pay like that i think it should be 10 dollars an hour since your rooms are so big.

If this is a once only job, pay by the day.
If this is a on-going job, pay by the hour. It is easier to go short or long depending on need/season etc.
Paying by the room is unfair given size / dirt differences.

If you have all that, then you can afford to pay her per day, no matter how long it takes her to clean or how soon. $100.00 per day. Today's top-notch housekeepers get paid appx. $9.00 per hour on the average.

While it's great to have someone clean your house, Be careful. Do your homework, if you are direct hiring someone off the street, get references, referrals etc...
If this person is injured in your house while performing cleaning duties you can be held responsible for medical bills etc. This is happening all over the country where people are claiming injury and filing suit sometimes fraudelant.
When you act as an employer and allow someone in your house you open yourself up to liablilty.
Not to be negative, but you have to be careful here.
If you use a good hiring practice, references, or someone you know you won't have any trouble.
There are companies that are bonded and insured and do this for a living, having proper papers in order. Check for a local company that may do this as a business.
As far as pay it depends on if you supply the cleaning supplies etc.. Simply determine what it's worth to you!
Good Luck!

Most cleaning services I have had experience with charged by the day. It is a flat rate per day. So, you need to spell out what you want completed. Also, this does not allow for the maids to take their time so they can get paid more. A flat rate is the way to go. Figure out how long it should take to clean to your standard. The pay should be 10-13 dollars an hour, so if you want your maid to clean for 3 hours, the daily rate should be at least $30. Even though a flat rate is best, the rate should be determined by how many hours you expect a maid to be there.

Well it sounds like you have a big house and the up keep is high. My sister worked as a maid for awhile and she got paid $15 an hour through a service. She mainly worked on big houses like yours, where there were big rooms and took more time dusting, vacuuming etc.. If you want to find out the going rate, call a maid service like Merry Maids and see what they charge and then you will have an idea on how much to charge. If it is a once a month thing or bi-weekly I would say $60-$100 a day. My sister is currently doing that now for a friend since she has the experience and that is what she gets paid $100 to do the whole house. I think if you do need the help why not have them do it all, so you have some free time for yourself or kids, whatever. It is nice to have a break and have someone else clean for a change anyway. Who likes to clean anyway?
