You'd be best off working for DHL or TNT and then become self employed. You need to build up a client base.

Its a very competitive business, My brother started his own business a couple of years and finds it very difficult. especially finding regular contracts, most companies have no loyalty to one company and can take a very long time to pay. Plus the cost of fuel is a big headache.

You don't make much money in courier. Especially if you are delivering them yourself. It is very hard to scale the business. You need to invest in vehicles, collection point, storage location, sorting, tracking and it's a whole Supply Chain System.
If you think hard enough, you better drop the idea. There are many ways to make money on the internet. You could just type terms like 'Make Money on Internet' and there are tons of information.

It might help to tell you where to start looking had you bothered to tell us where you are.
London and the South east try the local press. Yellow pages and Thompsons have their own drivers and they will call you when they need someone.
Unless they provide you with a vehicle don't bother if they want money up front. And if they want a deposit on the vehicle then you should think of it as money gone. I have never known anyone to get their vehicle deposits back.
And if you supply your own vehicle then make sure you know their rates before you do the work.

you dont need a client base. You just need a van, most courier companies a crying out for owner drivers. Target Express is a good place to start, failing that try all the other parcel carriers in your area.

To fully know what you will be doing and facing it's a good idea to visit competitors (competitor analysis) who offer the same type of service/products. This would be fundamental in setting the ground work for your buiness.
Questions to ask yourself
•How much capital can I invest?
•What will be my location and why?
•How will I penetrate the market?
•Who and why am I targeting?
•If I don’t braek even what contingence plan will I have?
Remember to legally register your business with company house and have a stable financial programme in place.
There are a vast amount of areas that you need to cover the above mentioned is just a small amount of it to which must be applied to achieve a successful business.
