Where do I find a housekeeping job?
Asked by Lynn D
Where do I begin to look??
Have done an online search for these type of jobs in my area and also visited the local job centre....with no luck.
I live in a fairly affluent area with lots of big posh houses, but obviously cannot just knock on doors. Also cannot afford to advertise in newspapers or magazines.
By the way, I have got experience..but picked up other jobs by word of mouth.

If you're in a fairly affluent area, you need to network. Rich people will not just pluck someone out of the blue without any recommendation from someone they trust. Mingle in your community, attend church and community affairs, get to know people. Then let them know you are available for housekeeping assignments.
On the Web, you can use free classified ads. Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are:
Craigslist http://www.craigslist.com
Google Base http://base.google.com
Classifieds for Free http://www.classifiedsforfree.com/...
Text Link Exchange http://www.txtswap.com/
Recycler.com http://www.recycler.com/
Yahoo Classifieds http://classifieds.yahoo.com/
US Free Ads http://www.usfreeads.com/

Look in the yellow pages or local newspaper service/job section under "domestic help". You could either directly apply at the residence or go through an agency (that you find in yellow pages or newspaper).

Tell more people, make some flyers, if you go to the hairdressers tell them - often people talk to their hairdressers and may ask if they know anyone they can employ to do that kind of work. Newsagents don't usually charge much to put a card in a window. If you know any young mums, tell them and they might tell their friends. Next time you visit your GP, tell the receptionist if they hear of anyone looking for home help, your their gal or guy. Good luck.

Look in 'The Lady' magazine which is where the best housekeeping jobs are advertised.
Make sure you get written references from your previous jobs - if you have not already got them, go back to your previous employers and ask if they would give you a reference.
In the meantime, register with a specialist agency - look for agencies offering housekeeping & cleaning services in your local Yellow Pages and approach them to employ you.
Good luck!
