What must I do to become a movie director?
Asked by naphythespiffyone
What universities are good for this, What kind of classes should I take in high school, What kind of clubs should I join, ect? Being a junior, do I still have time to do all this? Is there anywhere I can talk to Hollywood directors to get tips on becoming a director and being a good one? What must I do to get noticed as a director?

As a hgih schooler, be sure to do really well in your English and Art classes as they are most relevant to film. Also, if your school offers any elective classes that are media-related, sign right up. Also, most film schools will require that you submit to them a portfolio of work which will be the most important part of your application. Find a video camera (doesn't have to be high-tech) and start filmmaking! Write a story and shoot it. If you don't have a lot of money, there are basic movie editing software programs on Windows. Or if you have the means, get Final Cut Pro. Just start filmming everything! The mroe you practice, the better you will be, That is the ONLY way to learn...Also, if you don't have access to a video camera, film schools usually will accept still photographs as an alternative. But start thinking abotu your protfolio now. Find out what colleges you want to apply to, and check out their admissions requirements. When it comes to film schools, don't pick a school based solely on reputation. In the end, no one will care what college you went to or if you even went at all. In the end, it will come down to how talented you are and how your portfolio looks. That being said, choose a college that offers film production that is small, and most importantly has a very high equipment to student ratio. At the big-name colleges like NYU, there is not enough cameras for way too many students, making for a terrible learning environment....I attended SUNY Purchase, and they have a top-tier program that is highly successfull. And ithe tuition is only 4,000 a year! In the end, you need to posses the talent and visual creativity to be a storyteller. To get noticed, you need to take chances and be orginal. Always make sure you have something to give to someone so that they can see your work. Don't get discouraged because people will tell you that you will never make it. Just have thick skin, be determined, and work as hard as possible. Being a filmmaker is one of the toughest, most cut-throat and life-consuming industries, but it is also one of th emost rewarding and exciting fields as well. All the best!

USC, UCLA, NYU, Alliance International, etc. Do a little googling and you'll find many more. You may need to have some short student films under your belt before applying to these university programs. So, grab a camera and create a small body of promising work. These schools don't just take anyone.
