Find a plumber or an electrician and ask them if you can go with them to help them out in exchange for learning the trade. If you find someone who is willing to teach you, you will likely start out by doing a lot of manual work and you can get discouraged, but don't. Offer your services in exchange for them teaching you. You can also go to a junior college that has a program to teach a trade. They are usually real good ways to learn and a lot of them only require one or two years of school. But if you find someone will to teach you in exchange for a low wage or even working in exchange for their knowledge, it would be a win-win situation. What's good about being taught by a professional is that you will get an opportunity to meet other people in the trade. It'll give you a good start when you are ready to get a regular job if you already have an in. Good luck. Both fields are good fields to go into. You can do very well. Be patient and do a lot of listening.

Yes use the yellow pages and call the ones closest to you & then further away. Explain that you are setting up an apprenticeship or internship. Another way is to call and say how interested you are in the field and that you would like to meet and ask questions for fifteen minutes.
The most important thing is contact in person.
All the resumes, phonecalls etc mean nothing if you don't get to see people. Always ask what can you do to get into the field and if they have any contacts you can call for more info. Someone will offer you a job.
As for internship, explain you are a beginner and expect a low wage in return for being taught
a trade. Of course you should try the unions. But since everyone tries them, create your own internship. Or just say you want to learn.
People will be impressed by your eagerness.
Using the yellow pages, I have set up my own internship as well as gotten a job. Good luck!
