Well for a larger corporation I believe the path to become a CEO or CFO is definitely not fixed, but having an MBA does help especially if its from a top school, such as HBS, Sloan, Anderson, Haas, Marshall, and other top 25 business programs in the nation as well as a few international programs such as London Business School, INSEAD France, etc. Having multiple account degrees is much less useful since those programs tend to be too specific, since becoming a lead executive you must of social skills and be able to interact with others. I'd also say that leadership is a fundamental part of becoming a CEO or CFO.
Being an entrepreneur myself, I take on the role of CEO, CFO, and COO all in one, but I believe what has helped me be successful these past 10 years of business is my ability to adapt and be flexible. These are traits I believe make a great CEO and CFO. Take lead and example from the best and read about how they made their way to the top.

There are no rules. People get the position in thousands of ways. Ability to do the job is the most common, but all the jobs require different abilities.
