Is it legal to work somewhere when you are not on the payroll yet?
Asked by Todd
I got a job about a week and a half ago at a new resturant/sports bar. One of the owners told me during the middle of one of my first few shifts that she needed me to put an address on my I-9 form or some other tax form so she could put me on the payroll. Since then, everytime one of us thinks about it the other is busy and we forget about it. Is it ok that we keep forgetting and just make sure I get it taken care of soon?

You could have big problems at tax time.

You'll probably find that you're not insured under their insurance policy to work there until all the paperwork is complete.
I'd get it sorted asap!

Its not good business that is for sure. I dont think it would be illegal unless she never did have you fill out tax forms and just paid you cash with no record, that would be the illegal part.

NO it's NOT!!
I would go in there outside of when you work and get this taken care of. Make sure you take a copy of your social security card and your driver's license with you.
This has to be done within 3 days of working or they have to discharge you. And because this is not your fault, I would go in tomorrow and get this resolved, even if you are not schedule for a few days. Make sure you go in during their slow time so they can pull the information out.
