I want to become an Art Teacher?
Asked by speedy_me18
I want to go to school to become an art teacher. I was wondering what type of classes I would need to take. I tried looking on the website for Eau Claire, but it didn't help much. I live in Wisconsin and am close to Eau Claire, so I would probably go to UW-Eau Claire. Is this a hard profession? I love art and I love children so I thought that this would be a good type of job for me. What do you think?

Well, you'll be majoring in art, which as you can imagine, involves taking a ton of art classes. In addition, you'll be taking a set of core classes that every teacher has to take. You'll also have to decide whether you want to teach the primary or secondary aged kids. Primary is grade school, secondary is teens. Usually, primary level teachers are a lot happier with their jobs, mainly because the kids enjoy school at that age, and they soak up what they learn making them much more enjoyable to be around. If you don't mind making bottom of the barrel pay for having a college degree, then yeah, it sounds like you would probably enjoy teaching art. It sounds like something you should seriously consider. If you start to take college classes, you might want to take a look at trying to substitute teach so you can get an idea of what you'll be up against.

There are teacher training progs with an emphasis on art. Or you could get a degree in art and then go for teacher training. Maybe, you could try being an observer in a children's art class or a teacher's aide, so that you can see if this is really what you want. On the other hand, you could call or speak to a few people who are already art teachers in primary schools.

Go with your heart there are prerequisite classes you will need to take which involve principles of thought as in history, English, psychology and math where you look at it as a love to learn new things. good luck and enjoy
