What does a Facilities Department do?

My mate has just got a temp job as P.A. to the Facilities Manager, but what the heck is a Facilities department anyway?

I used to do a similar job for the Health & Safety and the Abbey National HQ. Facilities do a range of jobs from arranging the cleaners to be collected to fixing someones desk. Facilities take care of everything in a building and they usually have a helpesk that people can call to get stuff done within the building.

The facilities department is responsible for maintaining the building and offices...such as replacing burned out light bulbs, fixing problems with the heating or air conditioning, painting offices, etc.

Noramlly they manage the building, maintainance, vehciles, and negotiate contracts with suppliers for utlities, stationery etc.
