Need info on how to get in a Union for welders?

Im AWS certified in SMAW going for my L.A. city Certification. Im wondering how I can join and get in a local union for welders. I live in the Los Angeles area. Is there any phone #s or addreses, web sites, etc. that can be useful? Do I need work experience to get in?

well your off to a good start with your certs, im a union ironworker and as you know welding is a huge part of the job...there is a number you can call..its for my local in ny..the ba..or buisness agent will tell you what local to call in your area..your most likely going to join an apprenticeship program, first yr apprentice gets 70% of rate..second80% third 90% and after your fourth yr. you become journeyman and get the full rate. rate in brooklyn is 34 an hr. with a total package about 70 an hr. i imagine in la its around the same...the number is...1 800 421 4766..tell them you want to speak to the buisness agent or the apprenticeship coordinater..good luck
