How do you become a professional photographer from scratch?
Asked by vividcaramel
I'm 25 and have not been to college. I was thinking about going to school to learn photography. But I'm not sure how to get started. What program of study or major would I choice? How do you get hired as a professional? Is it expensive? Should I start saving up to buy an expensive SLR etc. Is this career worth it or should I just make it a hobby. I love taking pictures but have not had any training.

With the new digital age already come, professional photography is taking a major hit. I love taking pictures myself, but a career just isn't an option in my market area. What I would suggest is going around and talking to local photographers in your area. I don't think they will steer you wrong. Put together a nice portfolio of your best work, and see if you can start with them. Get your foot in the door. That's the best advice I think anyone could give.

My husband is going into photography starting next week. First of all just because you love taking pictures does not mean you will love doing photography as a job or even be good at it. I've heard and read from other photographers that if photography is your passion then don't make it your job. I would start off with the Nikon D80 that is what my husband is getting and he's done alot of research it seems to be the perfect camera for amateurs/professionals. I suggest you do ALOT of research first and decide if this is what you want to do. It isn't the wisest thing to major in photography because the job market is limited because the work is attractive to many. I would major in something else and take a few classes in photography as your elective. Hope this helps. You can always speak with a counselor at your local college.
