Career Questions and Answers
Can you help me find a job/career helping the environment?
Asked by CJP
I've been having a job crisis recently, I used to be a computer programmer, but found that to be too repetative for my personality.
I'm 29, I have a HS diploma, an Associates Degree in Automotive Maintenance Technology from a tech school.
I have about 2 years experience as a mechanic, and about 3 years experience as a Programmer II in Java. My last job paid $55,000 per year....
Here is my criteria:
This time, I don't care as much about the pay. I only need about $25,000 per year to make ends meet. I'm willing to take less to get "in the door", or until I get some college education in Life Sciences or something.
I want something that is not always in an office. I hated sitting in the same cube every day when I was a programmer.
I have spinal problems, and I've had a recent S5 to sacrum fusion, so I can't lift heavy objects, or endure repeated bending and lifting work.
I want to help wildlife or the environment.
I can't work directly with animals due to allergies.

How about a life change and learn what the rest of the world is doing by becoming a Rodman on a Survey Team. Evaluate how progress & land is being divided & dealt with, see new construction, then go and evaluate, measure all that you see, then write a book about it and start a new book as you continue on.

Try your state or government department of natural resources. You may want to take some more college courses first. Your type of degree may limit your oportunities in the field you've chosen but since the state or local agencies don't pay well for entry level positions your desire to work for $25k may be an asset. I wouldn't hold my hopes up though without additional college courses because you have no qualifications or experience in environmental studies and they'll have plenty of applicants that do.
