It depends on what type of restaurant you work at, the extent of business and table turnover per shift, day vs night shifts, how many days your working, what days of the week you work, menu prices, area, chain vs private, your ability and experience, union vs non-union, and your table section allotment. A private country club in the S.F. Bay area pays $14.00 per hr. but no tipping is allowed. Bigger cities have more exclusive restaurants, but I do fill in work at the restaurant I manage special events and banquets for, and I average about $150-$200 for a three hour shift. Banquets, my staff usually can take home anywhere from $200-$500 for one event. Long term union employees can make well over $100.000 per year, but it's hard to get your foot in the door to those types of opportunities. Might recommend becoming a Sommelier to better your chances at a higher paying and more exclusive restaurant.
