Is Certificate of Business Administration worth something when applying for a job?
Asked by Kaytee
I want to get a job in a biotech company. I have a PhD in biomedical sciences and I am thinking of getting an MBA. However, a local college offers a 10-weak business training session, which would make me eligible for a Certificate in Business Administration (not a degree).
Would it be an advantage to have it? Would it help me apply for a job? Or is it just a waste of time and money ($750) and should I rather invest more and get a real degree?

I work in HR and I find myself not looking at what type of a degree that one has as much as what kind of classes they have taken or do they have the experience regardless of what classes they have taken. If there is a certain class you need such as accounting whatever, go for it it can't hurt, but if you have the necessary knowledge already it's not worth it just for an additional item on your resumee.

no it isn't worth the time and money. There will be no advantage in putting it on your resume. People that would take the class, is someone that never went to college and just needs to put some extra education on their resume above high school. You would be better off putting the time into your MBA.

It would give you an advantage over most of the other PhD's. It would certify that you know a little about running a business, which is something most do NOT. If you are wanting to appear as a well rounded professional this would certainly document that. It should give you an edge when competing for jobs as well.
