I don't know what country you're in, but here in the U.S., you can get all the information you need regarding pay, job qualifications, education needed, demand, etc. U.S. Department of Labor http://www.bls.gov/oco/home.htm

To confirm what Rochey said you can get anything up to £1K a week on price. But then you get the weekend where you can probably add another £1K to that. A traditional roof can be completed in 2 - 3 days, for £3-5K I picked the wrong trade

I would say in general, the Carpenter if he is really good, because frankly, you'll always earn more working for yourself than for others and if you are good and develop the contacts, it's an easy route into property development. True quantity surveyors are not really around anymore, since taking off quants is a thing of the past with computers and CAD drawings. They are really the accountants of the construction industry. In fairness, if you are a really good Q.S you can often progress to higher management in construction, because you can play the figures to suit yourself, and presenting final accounts as being your achievements and not the poor b****** who have really done the work. Out of touch with figures, but a good carpenter should make £50,000 a year and a good Q.S a similar figure but remember, your body will get tired quicker than your mind.
