I want to become a Police Officer but encountered a barrier. Can anyone help me?
Asked by FullSpeedAhead
Hello, Im a 25 year old Asian male, a junior at a So Cali University. My goal in life is to become a police officer, but I came across a huge barrier. I have a huge fear of smashed up, mangled bodies. I neglected to realize that on the job, you will have calls to homes with rotting bodies, homicides, and suicides, and such. And also, part of the police academy is to take a tour of a coroners office, and watch an autopsy. I usually look away but I realized that on the job, you just cannot. Is there any way for someone to overcome this fear? My goals, hopes, and dreams in life was to become a peace officer, and because of this I feel as if my life just stopped. And I cant move foward. Im so depressed right now.

Consider getting counseling to help overcome your fears. A counselor can help you with a process called "desensitization." Check with the counseling center of your school to get help or find outside resources.

Hi there. Its great that you want to be a police officer. I just graduated from a police academy and an currently working as a police officer now. I also had the same problem as you but with time you can get through it, trust me. The things you will get out of being a ploice officer will far out way the things you have to deal with. Over time, you will get use to scenes like that as I am already adjusting. Don't give up, maybe I will see you on the job someday. Best of luck, stay safe!

watch all the crime drama's and reality shows on TV (Law and Order, CSI, court tv etc). I'd imagine many people can grow numb to such a thing, while others can not. I'm not sure i ever could, but i guess everyone is different.

Good luck...maybe see a therapist to figure out why your fear is holding you back

Nobody doing the job enjoys that aspect of the job but you deal with it. Typically it is a rare occurrence that you would deal with such things. If you are that depressed and can't move forward you probably won't pass your psych test. I never had to go to the coroners office when I went through the academy. If dealing with that aspect of the job has you so worked up maybe think about working for probation, juvenile hall or corrections
