'inside' sales in being the person answering phones or helping customers that walk through your door. 'Outside' sales is a solicitor. You go out (walk, drive, bike, etc) to potential customers and have them buy something from you.

Inside sales are usually retail or from an order desk and over the phone. Outside sales are usually where you go out to the customer's place of business or home and pitch the product.

Inside sales answers phones for your outside salesmen customers and your outside salesperson when they are out making the connections. The outside Salesperson goes to the customers usually on a weekly basis and takes care of problems and tries to get the customer to buy more. They the relay the order back to the inside salesperson and then he/she would type up the order.
